WATERLOO, Neb. (AP) — Four people were fatally injured in a head-on collision in foggy and icy conditions Friday morning in eastern Nebraska's Douglas County, authorities said.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the accident occurred about 5 a.m. on U.S. Highway 275 just west of Waterloo.
The driver of a 1998 Honda Civic lost control of the car on the eastbound viaduct near West Maple Road and slammed into an oncoming pickup truck, Chief Deputy Marty Bilek said.
The four people killed were in the car, Bilek said. Deputies were trying to verify their names and hometowns.
The pickup driver was in fair condition when taken to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. Bilek identified him as Douglas Nowicki, 63, of Waterloo.
Another accident on the highway occurred about a mile south a few minutes later. No injuries were reported in the collision between two trucks.
The reports of black ice or an icy glaze on several roadways in the area prompted officials to send out trucks spreading salt and sand.
There may be good traction on surface roads, Bilek said, but bridges and overpasses will be icy when the temperature is near freezing and humidity is high.
