Five people were injured when scaffolding collapsed at a construction site on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg at midday Friday.

Three of the hurt were carried away in ambulances with injuries that were not considered life-threatening while the other two were treated on-site. None of those hurt was a university student or employee, according to a university news release.

The accident happened inside a fenced off construction zone surrounding Davidson Hall near the Drillfield.

A hydraulic scaffolding rig had been raised to the second floor when part of it gave way about 11:45 a.m. Construction crews stood by as police and ambulances blocked off roads and carried away the injured.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation, according to the news release.

Davidson Hall houses classrooms, laboratories and offices for Virginia Tech's chemistry department. The building is undergoing a two-year renovation that will provide 45,000 square feet of state-of-the-art lab space and a new lecture hall that will seat 300 people.
