A horse and carriage crashed in the 100 block of Harristown Road in Paradise Township, sending five people to the hospital Saturday afternoon.

At about 1:45 p.m., a motorcycle came around a sharp turn and startled the horse, causing it to run off the road and run the carriage into a tree, Kinzer Fire Company Chief Doug Brubaker said. When the open carriage hit the tree and flipped over, two women, one teen girl and two children were thrown from it, Brubaker said.

One woman was found lying face down in a field and complained of severe back pain. The other adult female complained of shoulder pain. There was no immediate indication of the injuries to the teen and children, though all were taken to the hospital by ambulance, Brubaker said.

The horse broke free and ran about a half-mile, where an Amish neighbor caught the horse, he added.

More information about the motorcyclist was not available.

Pennsylvania State Police were on the scene, along with the Kinzer Fire Company, Lancaster EMS and three ambulances.
