NEW YORK - Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano named Dr. Glenn Asaeda as the new Chief Medical Director of the Office of Medical Affairs (OMA). Dr. Asaeda is a 15-year veteran of the FDNY and succeeds Dr. John Freese, who has served the Department for more than a decade.
“Dr. Glenn Asaeda has spent his life in the field of Emergency Medical Service, working tirelessly to improve patient care and treat the sick and injured,” said Commissioner Cassano. “In his new role as Chief Medical Director of OMA, he will continue his outstanding work with the Department and look to further improve what is already the best pre-hospital care found anywhere in the world.”
Dr. Asaeda, a native of San Francisco, has been involved in emergency medical work for more than 30 years, starting out as an EMS cadet in California in the early 1980s where he served his community working as an EMT, paramedic and 911 dispatcher.
After graduating from medical school at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1993, Dr. Asaeda completed his emergency medicine residency at the Brooklyn Hospital Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. He joined the FDNY in 1998 as an EMS Fellow, and went on to serve as an OMA physician and Division Medical Director for Brooklyn and Staten Island.
On Sept. 11th, 2001, Dr. Asaeda supervised triage activities at the World Trade Center. In 2012, he was appointed First Deputy Medical Director, and during and after Hurricane Sandy, he played a critical role in coordinating patient evacuations from Bellevue Hospital.
In addition to his work in OMA, Dr. Asaeda is currently the Assistant Medical Team Manager for the New York Task Force Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR), and has been part of the USAR deployments to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston and to communities in upstate New York following Hurricane Irene.
