PHILADELPHIA - Police said nearly two dozen people were treated and one person is in critical condition after a bus carrying day laborers flipped over in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section.

SkyFox was over the scene of the crash that occurred around 2:45 p.m. on the 2800 block of East Westmoreland Street.

East Westmoreland Street and a northbound Interstate 95 off-ramp at Allegheny Avenue were closed for some time after the crash.

Police said 22 people were onboard the dark blue-colored Del Val Service bus when it rolled over and struck a pole at the base of the I-95 offramp.

Executive Chief Daniel Williams of the Philadelphia Fire Department said 16 people were transported to various hospitals, and one had a serious head injury. That person was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition.

Williams said 11 medic units were called to the scene.

The company declined immediate comment.

Police said it appears a mechanical issues played a role in the crash, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

SkyFox showed emergency responders placing multiple patients lined up on backboards into ambulances a short time after the crash. The rear end of the bus also appeared to be partly torn off.
