WALNUT CREEK - Owners of McCovey's Restaurant raised $10,000 to help a fellow San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten after a game at Dodger Stadium.
The restaurant, dedicated to Giants Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, held a fundraiser Friday for Bryan Stow, the paramedic who was attacked after the Giants-Dodgers opening night game March 31.
The restaurant raised $6,100 through an auction, raffle and other donations. Because the restaurant had a goal of $10,000, owner Rocky Dudum I donated $3,900.
Auctioned off were signed jerseys from McCovey and current Giants Buster Posey and Tim Lincecum. One of the Lincecum jerseys went for $950 to a man eating a burger at the bar who decided to buy it to help the cause, said Rocky Dudum II, a manager at the restaurant.
More than 700 people showed up for the event, he said, and some of those who didn't purchase raffle tickets or auction items dropped cash in a bowl.
"We didn't imagine that this many people would be this energized by it," Dudum II said. "We have a platform to showcase not just big sporting events but to do our part to rally the community together."
Dudum II said it would have been "silly" not to do something for Stow, who has been in and out of a medically induced coma since he was attacked by two men outside Dodger Stadium.
All of the money raised will go to Stow and his family.
Dudum I and McCovey have been friends since 1959, and are arranging to have the fundraiser money handed over by McCovey personally to the Stow family in the near future at AT&T park, Dudum II said.
