CHICO, Calif. -- Four employees of the First Responder EMS office in Chico were recognized at a ceremony in San Francisco earlier this month for meritorious actions and exemplary service to the community.
The Emergency Medical Services Authority presented Emergency Medical Technician Harrison Stewart with a Meritorious Service Medal.
On Oct. 31, 2010, Stewart, California Highway Officers, and an Enloe FlightCare crew responded to a head-on collision on Highway 99 at Highway 162, near Oroville.
The vehicles were on fire, and occupants were trapped. Stewart was directed to a man who had been removed from the wreckage and was on the shoulder of the road.
The EMT said burning gasoline from one of the vehicles was quickly approaching the victim, and he acted quickly to drag him to safety.
Stewart later performed triage on the victims and was instrumental in getting the worst injured directly to a burn unit in Sacramento.
On June 2, EMT Jessica Batz and Battalion Chief Matt Wolfe were off-duty at Paradise High School and attending the graduation of their respective relatives.
Both Batz and Wolf were leaving the ceremony and were alerted to a person down and unresponsive in the parking lot.
The person had no pulse and wasn't breathing. The emergency was heightened when the EMTs realized the victim was a co-worker of theirs. They began CPR immediately. Upon arrival by the Fire Department, the victim was defibrillated and had spontaneous restoration of circulation.
In receiving Lifesaving Medals, the EMTs were recognized for quick action that provided the victim with the best chance of survival.
Marilyn Dioszeghy teaches basic lifesaving skills for First Responder and was recognized with a Community Service Award for passing on that skill to 243 people in 2010 alone.
Her supervisor, Amy Castellucio, said she gets phone calls on a regular basis from individuals and groups requesting that Marilyn lead a class. "She is always there when needed, and truly enjoys teaching," Castellucio said.
Dioszeghy is a faculty member with First Responder's Training Center.
