HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A bus driver trying to avoid hitting a pedestrian slammed into a multi-family house on Long Island, killing a 6-year-old boy inside and injuring his older brother, Nassau County police said.
It was one of two fatal accidents on the island involving public buses on Tuesday evening.
David Granados, 6, was killed when the bus, part of the Nassau Inter County Express system, crashed into the house in Hempstead around 9:30 p.m., police said. The boy and his 7-year-old brother were in the front bedroom of the house when the bus hit the pedestrian before plowing into the house, police said.
Police said 11 passengers suffered minor injuries. About 20 people were on the bus.
The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His brother suffered minor injuries, police said.
The pedestrian who was struck was taken to the hospital. Police described his injuries as non-life threatening.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicated no apparent criminality. The investigation was continuing.
Earlier that evening, a 35-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a transit bus in Coram. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 p.m. There were no other injuries.
