A CareFlight doctor performed emergency roadside surgery on a trapped driver as Fire & Rescue officers worked to free him at Wallacia, in Sydney’s south-west, today.
Supported by ambulance paramedics and police, the teams stabilised the man who was trapped for 40 minutes.
CareFlight landed beside Bents Basin Road at 6 pm to allow the crew doctor to initiate treatment for the driver and two passengers.
The CareFlight doctor said the driver, believed to be aged in his 30s, suffered head, chest, abdominal and arm injuries when he car left the road and careered down a gully before it hit a tree.
After the surgery the doctor placed the man in an induced coma on a ventilator then administered a blood transfusion before flying the man to Westmead Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on arrival.
Ambulance paramedics took the two passengers to Liverpool Hospital suffering serious injuries.
