JEMS Editor-in-Chief A.J. Heightman was awarded the Paul E. Pepe National Excellence in EMS Award at the Gathering of Eagles in Dallas, Texas, on February 28, 2014. The award is presented by the members of the U.S. Metropolitan Municipalities Emergency Medical Services Medical Directors Consortium, also known as “The Eagles” in recognition of excellent contributions to the EMS community.

A.J. has been reporting from the 16th annual Gathering of Eagles, an annual event open to EMS physicians, nurses, paramedics and others interested in the current state of the science in EMS. The Eagles are an elite group comprised of the EMS Medical Directors of the major U.S. Metropolitan Municipalities. Their annual gathering is designed to share the latest knowledge and advances in EMS patient care, research and management issues as well as challenges and lessons learned from across the country. Attendance at the event is growing annually with an estimated 1,000 participants present this year.

A.J. Heightman is the only non-physician member of the Consortium, an invitation extended because of his staunch advocacy and stature in the EMS community. The prestigious award presented earlier today recognizes his continued leadership and contributions to the advancement of EMS. Kudos to A.J. for his tireless efforts to promote EMS and keep JEMS readers in the loop on important topics and developments that enable them to provide innovative care to patients.
