CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — One worker suffered a hand injury and another inhaled some fumes when mixing chemicals exploded at a plant in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Officials with OC Lugo Co., which owns the plant in Connellsville, did not immediately return a call for comment on the incident reported about 7 a.m. Wednesday to Fayette County 911 dispatchers.
New Haven Volunteer Fire Chief Bob Topper says the workers were mixing chemicals for the company which makes oxygen generators for the military. The chief says the chemicals included red phosphorous powder, and says investigators aren't sure why they exploded.
One worker's hand was injured, and he may have lost some fingers, while a second worker complained of ringing ears and reported inhaling some of the chemicals.
Connellsville is about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, where the workers were flown to a hospital.
