HANNIBAL, Mo. -- The city of Hannibal made weekend preparations for flood waters, but a Mississippi River crest was lower than expected.

Emergency management director John Hark says the city put all five of its flood gates into place after the National Weather Service predicted the river would crest around 23 feet at noon on Saturday.

The crest never got that high. The river level was at about 21.3 feet Monday, about 5 feet above flood stage. Hark says the flood gates will be removed, and that Hannibal is open for business.

Last week's heavy rains caused moderate flooding at a few other spots on the Mississippi and other rivers, but no major problems are expected.
