2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

Emergency managers hold simulation training

| Monday, June 1, 2009

MIAMI -- Emergency managers in Florida are taking part in a simulation of the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 on the first day of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane season begins Monday. It runs from June 1 through the end of November each year.

The busiest part of the season is typically in August and September.

In May, federal forecasters predicted nine to 14 named tropical storms. The predicted near-normal season is expected to include four to seven hurricanes. Between one and three storms are likely to be major _ a Category 3 storm or higher.
