Crane Collapse

From the May 2008 Issue | Thursday, November 13, 2008

FDNY EMS Rescue and Haz Tac crews (in tan turnout gear) responded to and cared for critically injured patients on Saturday, March 15, when a crane broke away from an apartment tower under construction in Manhattan and toppled across 51st St. and onto buildings as far as a block away. Six construction workers and a woman visitingNew York City for St. Patrick's Day were killed. Two dozen people were injured, including a firefighter critically injured in a secondary collapse. John Peruggia, Chief of EMS Command for FDNY, described the heavy crane's fall and consequent damage it caused to nearby structures as being ˙like a hot knife cutting through butter.Ó For more on this MCI and its associated rescues, see Lessons Learned, p. 30.
