PASCO COUNTY, Fla. -- A Pasco County paramedic accused of stealing $300 from a 71-year-old patient's wallet this summer resigned on Friday.

According to a report from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Joshua Vitori, 26, went by ambulance July 15 to a Zephyrhills home where a man was having chest pains.

The man's wife handed his wallet to a paramedic to retrieve his insurance card. A few minutes later, the man was asked for a list of medications, and was handed his wallet back, the report says. Missing from his wallet was $300.

The Sheriff's Office said the investigation took months to complete because they couldn't reach Vitori at first. When they finally made contact, Vitori denied stealing the money, but told authorities he may have accidentally taken it, said sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll.

Vitori started his career with the county as a firefighter EMT in 2002, and became a paramedic in 2005, said county personnel director Barbara DiSimone. He made a $50,000 salary.

He now faces a charge of grand theft.
