MERRILL - An unidentified man was being held at North Central Health Care Center pending criminal charges after a hostage standoff with police Wednesday afternoon near Merrill.
The incident at a home on Highway 17 in the town of Merrill was reported at 3:25 p.m., originally as a routine medical problem, according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.
When medical personnel approached the residence, they saw what appeared to be a man armed with a pistol, and they left, calling police for help, the release said.
Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department and a Department of Natural Resources warden were first on the scene, and they found the suspect holding the handgun to the head of a person inside the home, police said.
