Suspension Ends for NYC EMTs in Bagel Shop Incident

AL BAKER | | Thursday, January 21, 2010

A woman, pregnant and clearly in distress inside an Au Bon Pain store in Brooklyn, needed medical help. Two city medical workers, waiting in line, refused to provide it; the woman eventually died.

That has been the accepted version of what happened on Dec. 9, an event that has brought condemnation from the pregnant woman s mother and the mayor, an investigation by the district attorney s office and a suspension without pay for the two city workers.

That suspension ends Thursday, when the two workers, Jason Green and Melisa Jackson, are to be reinstated.

On Wednesday, the two spoke publicly for the first time since the woman s death. They said they wanted to offer condolences to the family of the woman, Eutisha Reve Rennix, 25; they also sought to give their version of what happened that day, and how it differed from what has been reported.

Ms. Jackson, 23, and Mr. Green, 32, both of Queens, said they had no idea they were in trouble until they learned on Dec. 18 that they had been placed on restricted duty. Two days later, The New York Post published the first account of the incident.

You re telling me that at 9:13 in the morning somebody is going to drop dead in front of us, turn blue, and we re just going to sit there and say, We re drinking coffee and eating bagels, there s nothing we can do, we re trainees? Mr. Green said. You re telling me that we re going to just stand there and just go about our business?

He answered his own question: That is all bogus and lies and fabrications. Ms. Jackson agreed.
