Off-Duty Paramedic Saves Toddler

TAMPA, FL --Tampa Police investigate the near drowning of a 17-month old boy in Tampa.

Police say the victim and his his 4-year-old brother were at their babysitter's home at in Tampa while their parents were away on vacation.

Around 10:30am on Tuesday morning, the toddler managed to get out of his high chair, open a door and fell into the backyard swimming pool. The babysitter and her boyfriend found the child unconscious in the pool.

A neighbor, Josh Schwade, who is also a paramedic with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue performed CPR on the child. Tampa Police Officer Nick Wilson arrived at the scene and began helping Schwade with his efforts to revive the boy.

The toddler was brought to University Community Hospital where he is in very critical condition. His parents have been notified of the accident and are in touch with the hospital. Detectives continue to interview witnesses.

At this point, it appears the near drowning is accidental.
