Board OKs 9-1-1 requests

| Monday, September 24, 2007

The Tyrone Township Board voted 4-3 on Tuesday to allow Livingston County 911 dispatchers to honor a caller's request for ambulance service only.

The hot-button issue is tied to the high cost of fire calls, which can cost residents more than $1,100 per run and has drawn many complaints.

The township already had lowered what it bills residents for a fire department EMS run to $300, instead of the higher rate.

The township contracts with Fenton and Fenton Township fire departments, which charge the more than $1,100 flat rate per run.

Supervisor Andrew Schmidt, Clerk Hod Morton, Trustee Lynn Thompson and Trustee Bob Byerly voted to support the change.

Treasurer David Kurtz and Trustees Brian Miles and Steve Nagy voted against the new policy.

Earlier in the year when the issue was first discussed, Miles questioned the change, saying giving a caller the power of who responds might not be a good idea.

But Morton, who already had implemented the change earlier this month before he realized a board vote was needed, noted Thursday that several other communities have the same policies, including Hartland Township, Deerfield Township, and Brighton.
