Saybrook FD Receives State EMS Grant

Oct. 2--SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP -- The Saybrook Fire Department has been awarded grant money from the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Emergency Medical Services.

Each year, part of the funds collected from seatbelt violations goes into a fund and then is awarded to various EMS departments which apply for funding, said Chief William Kaiser. Any agency that applies for the grants and meets certain criteria can receive funds, he said.

Agencies have a specified amount of time to use the funds and any funds not used in that amount of time have to be given back to the state, Kaiser said.

"We have to provide documentation as to what we spend and what we spent it on and submit a canceled check and the bill (to the state)," he said. "If we fail to use it, we have to give it back."

Saybrook has received this grant for at least 10 years. Kaiser said each year the available funds are decreasing because of the increasing number of people wearing seatbelts. This year Saybrook was awarded $5,500.

The grant money is specifically designated for equipment and training. The state provides each agency with a list of approved uses for the funds, Kaiser said.
