New Ambulance Compliance Officer Certification Program Announced

| Friday, July 18, 2014

NAAC, the nation’s leading source for education and certification programs in ambulance billing and compliance, announces the nation’s first-ever certification course for Ambulance Compliance Officers.  Registration is now being accepted for the premiere offering of the new course, which will be held Oct. 11-12, 2014, at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pa.

“The Certified Ambulance Compliance Officer (CACO) program is a milestone for the industry,” NAAC President Steve Wirth said. “It is the first program in the United States to offer compliance training and certification specifically for ambulance service compliance officers.”

Wirth’s partner, fellow attorney Doug Wolfberg, who together developed the course with attorney and former ambulance service compliance officer Amanda Ward, noted that “the ambulance industry has become a key focal point for state and federal enforcement agencies, such as the Department of Justice, FBI and Office of Inspector General.” Wolfberg added that “now, it is more important than ever that EMS agencies clearly demonstrate their commitment to compliance. We have seen more audits, investigations and false claim act cases brought against ambulance companies just in the past three years than we have in the ten years before that.”

Attorney and course co-developer Amanda Ward added that “having a specially trained, Certified Ambulance Compliance Officer helps EMS agencies build a truly effective compliance program—one that is more than just a binder on a shelf. A compliance program must be a living, breathing, continuous and dynamic effort, led by a qualified compliance officer. The CACO program was designed to fit that bill.”

The first CACO course takes place immediately prior to abc3 (the Ambulance Billing, Coding and Compliance Clinic), the largest ambulance reimbursement seminar in the nation, which runs from Oct. 14-15, 2014, and is conducted by the National EMS Industry Law Firm of Page, Wolfberg & Wirth, LLC of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

The CACO course features a rigorous two full days of classroom instruction, taught by EMS attorneys and ambulance compliance professionals. Students must demonstrate proficiency in the material by successfully completing a written examination at the conclusion of the course. Certified Ambulance Compliance Officers must maintain their certification by obtaining annual Continuing Education hours in approved topic areas. The CACO course covers key areas such as compliance program development and implementation, ethics, the role of the Ambulance Compliance Officer, performing internal compliance audits, understanding healthcare fraud and abuse laws and many other topics. The course was developed by attorneys and ambulance compliance professionals, and the educational content vetted by industry experts.

About NAAC

The National Academy of Ambulance Compliance (NAAC) was formed in 2008 to provide education and certification programs to ambulance billing and compliance professionals. In addition to the new CACO program, NAAC also offers the Certified Ambulance Coder (CAC) course, which has trained thousands of ambulance billing professionals in proper billing and coding practices. NAAC courses are also offered in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh, and NAAC has entered into a continuing education relationship with the CMS Medicare Learning Network, with several Medicare Administrative Contractors, and numerous statewide ambulance associations. NAAC is recognized as the gold standard in EMS billing and compliance education. Registration information for the CACO course can be found at www.AmbulanceCompliance.com
