The Society of Chest Pain Centers has given full accreditation to the St. Elizabeth s Hospital Chest Pain Center in Belleville, Ill.
The Cycle II accreditation lasts through 2010. The Chest Pain Center in Belleville was the first healthcare facility in the St. Louis Metropolitan area and the 70th nationwide to receive Cycle I accreditation in 2004, according to hospital spokeswoman Kelly Barbeau.
Stringent criteria that had to be met to achieve the accreditation must be demonstrated by the hospital staff and the Chest Pain Center and include: Assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly; integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system; effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms; ensure Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training; have a functional design that promotes optimal patient care and support community outreach programs to educate the public about symptoms of a possible heart attack.
By achieving this level of accreditation, St. Elizabeth s is signifying to its patients that we will continue to provide the very best cardiac care that any hospital nationwide can offer, said Sue Beeler, manager of the Heart and Vascular Center. Re-accreditation at the Cycle II level brought even more stringent and demanding criteria than that in 2004. We are excited to be able to produce some of the very best cardiac patient outcomes of any hospital in the St. Louis area.
Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. The goal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of these patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time that it takes to receive treatment, and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.
