Harvard interested in MCHD study of EMS

The Montgomery County Hospital District is drawing national attention for reducing by half the number of side effects experienced during emergencies in less than a year.

Paramedics receive standardized training, but when they step out of an ambulance onto a scene they may face upset family members, poor lighting, bad weather, bad road conditions and other problems not found in a sterile hospital room. Given such conditions, side effects - including hyperventilation, hypoxia and irregular heart rate - can occur and paramedics must use their expertise to adjust dosages, ventilators and treatments to meet a patient's specific needs.
