Firefighters cut a hole in a house in Lansing, Mich., and used a forklift to extricate a 900-pound man from his second-floor bedroom after a visiting nurse became worried about his health.
Rescue workers were called in Tuesday by the nurse. Fire Chief Tom Cochran said the man, 33, hadn't left his home since 2003. A brother said he has Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic disorder that creates chronic hunger that can lead to life-threatening obesity.
The man was placed on a platform, lowered and covered with a tarp to shield him from gawkers. He was taken to a hospital by a flatbed truck.
