Training Program is Largest in U.S. History

FDNY | | Friday, December 7, 2007

NEW YORK-- On Monday, Dec. 10, the Fire Department of New York will be holding a very large and historic graduation/promotion ceremony for its EMS command.

Besides the two captains being promoted to deputy chief and 71 new hires graduating as EMTs, the largest single paramedic training program in NYC and U.S. history will be taking place.

Paramedic basic programs #7 and #8 -- consisting of 73 new paramedics, two paramedic captains and five paramedic lieutenants -- will graduate. These 80 members of the FDNY EMS Command are completing a challenging nine month educational program that started last spring and was conducted at the departments EMS Academy located at Fort Totten Queens.

The FDNY and City of New York are committed to advancing EMTs to Paramedics and enhancing the level of EMS Service in NYC. Nearly 300 EMTs have completed the department's paramedic program since September 2004. Currently, 60 more are engaged in training and another 65 will begin in the spring of 2008.

The FDNY EMS system is the largest and busiest in the U.S. Last year, more than 1,164,000 assignments were handled.
