Crafton Hills Collegegraduated 15 students with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Paramedic certificates Thursday.
The graduates were required to complete a comprehensive 1,220-hour course teaching emergency medical care, including learning skills to handle trauma situations, cardiac problems, respiratory problems, delivering babies, and emergency care for children.
CHC EMT-paramedic professor Jim Holbrook, the planned speaker for the evening, was unable to attend due to a family emergency. Holbrook gave his presentation to paramedic student Johnathan Uribe to read at the commencement ceremony.
"As a paramedic, the only device you really need is you," Holbrook said. "Your special ability to think under extreme circumstances is your greatest strength. This attribute has always been consistent regardless of new technology."
Several years ago, Holbrook identified the mnemonic for EMT-P (Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic) as standing for "every moment try peace."
"Those words are even more important today as the world in which you respond is getting more and more extreme," Holbrook said. "When the news shows extremists and the destruction they cause, look in the background and see the emergency services workers who responded to bring calm to chaos.
