WASHINGTON - The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) today honored journalists from Kaiser Health News, Modern Healthcare and National Public Radio for their outstanding reporting on emergency medicine issues. ACEP recognized them during the organization's Leadership and Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC.

"These journalists have gone above and beyond to educate the public about two important issues in emergency medicine - violence in hospitals and psychiatric emergencies," said Dr. David Seaberg, president of ACEP. "They have done outstanding jobs of researching the issues and putting them into perspective. They portrayed the problems in ways the public can understand and conveyed the views of experts describing solutions."

The following are ACEP's 2012 Journalism of Excellence Award recipients:

Joe Carlson, reporter, Modern Healthcare
David Burda, editor Modern Healthcare

Joe Carlson and David Burda received awards for the cover story "Danger Zone Lapses," a comprehensive three-part series about hospital violence, especially occurring in the emergency department. In addition to analyzing the issues and showing how tragically common workplace violence in hospitals is, the piece examines how hospital CEOs can make a difference in keeping patients and hospital staff safe.

Jenny Gold, reporter, Kaiser Health News
Joe Neel, editor, National Public Radio

Jenny Gold and Joe Neel collaborated to produce the radio report, "Mentally Ill Languish in Hospital Emergency Rooms," an outstanding piece focused on how the cutbacks in mental health services are affecting emergency patients and that educates the public about psychiatric boarding. Ms. Gold traveled to Pawtucket Memorial Hospital in Rhode Island and met with physicians and patients to get an up close and personal look at struggles facing patients and physicians.

ACEP is the national medical specialty society representing emergency medicine. ACEP is committed to advancing emergency care through continuing education, research and public education. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, ACEP has 53 chapters representing each state, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. A Government Services Chapter represents emergency physicians employed by military branches and other government agencies.
