9/11 Hero's Son Saves a Life

NEW YORK -- He's a hero, just like his dad.

A second-generation FDNY member, whose father died on 9/11, made his first rescue yesterday, pulling a man from a burning Brooklyn building.

Firefighter Thomas Gies, of Ladder 147 in Midwood, responded to the 2:10 p.m. blaze on Flatbush Avenue and found a man lying on the third floor.

"He was totally unconscious and not breathing," Gies said.

The three-year FDNY veteran and a colleague carried him downstairs through heavy smoke.

Paramedics rushed the victim to Kings County Hospital, where he was revived and was in critical but stable condition.

Gies' father, Ronnie, who was assigned to Haz-Mat Squad 288 in Queens, died in the south tower of the World Trade Center.

"It hasn't been easy doing what my father was doing when he was killed," Thomas Gies said.

"But today made it all worth it."
