Video: Generator Fire Forces CT Hospital Evacuation

| Wednesday, August 12, 2009

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London has reopened its emergency room after a fire outside the building forced officials to relocate patients and cancel surgeries.

A hospital spokesman says an underground electrical transformer right outside the emergency room caught fire Tuesday morning, sending flames 30 feet into the air. A police officer and hospital employee were treated for heat exhaustion, but no one else was injured.

Fire marshals are still investigating the cause.

A hospital spokesman says damage to the building was limited to a cracked window and water in some patient rooms.

About 60 to 70 patients were relocated to other parts of the hospital. Officials transferred 11 patients to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.
