Free Training: Field Interviews

Working with cooperative & uncooperative subjects

| Friday, July 5, 2013

The Firefighters Support Foundation (FSF) has released its newest free video program, The Narrative-Based Field Interview for First Responders. The program describes the powerful narrative-based approach to gathering accurate, actionable information from both cooperative and uncooperative subjects. The three-step approach is useful in all first-responder situations: law enforcement, fire, EMS, S&R, and emergency management. It is applicable on a scene for use with witnesses, bystanders, suspects, and resource providers, even in short time-frames. It is based on the approach developed by law enforcement and arson investigators.

The presenter is Stan Walters, A.K.A. "The Lie Guy", who has been researching and teaching interview techniques full-time for more than 30 years. Stan is a sought-after expert witness in this area. The video program runs one hour and 22 minutes, and is accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation. The program provides turn-key training. Individuals can view the programs at their leisure, while agencies can use the PowerPoint slides as distributed notes, run the video presentation, and pause the video to discuss the material. In this way, the training is consistent from session to session, trainer time is greatly reduced, and the training is completely documented.

Like all FSF programs, this program is free to all public safety professionals.
