EMS Helps Woman Whose Arm Was Partially Severed in Machine

JAMES CITY, Va. -- A female employee of Lumber Liquidators in James City County had her arm partially severed when it got caught in an industrial machine she was working with early Monday afternoon.

James City County firefighters and medics responded around 2 p.m. to a call of a traumatic injury at the lumber and flooring business in the 3000 block of John Deere Road in the Stonehouse Commerce Park.

When medics arrived, they found a 45-year-old woman with a severely injured left arm, said District Chief Bob Ryalls, with the James City County Fire Department. The arm was torn, rather than cut, Ryalls said.

A medical evacuation helicopter was called to take the woman to the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond. Her condition was not immediately available because her identity is not being released by county fire officials.

The woman had been working on a machine that smoothed the surface of pieces of lumber for hardwood flooring, Ryalls said.

The company relocated its national headquarters to the former John Deere manufacturing site in 2004. The firm, which went public in late 2007, has more than 160 stores nationwide and expects to open more than 30 new stores this year, according to a recent statement of its latest quarterly financial results.
