INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - One child is in critical condition after a police chase ended when the vehicle being chased crashed into a day care center Thursday afternoon. Three other children and two adults were also injured in the crash.

According to Indianapolis Metro Police, a chase ensued after a robbery of a Family Dollar store at 51st Street and Keystone Avenue. It ended when the suspect's vehicle crashed into Stepping Stones Child Care at 46th Street and Allisonville Road just after noon. The vehicle caught fire once it hit the building, but it is not known how much damage it caused.

Seventeen children were inside the building when the crash occurred. Methodist Hospital reported they are treating four children, and one of them is in critical condition. The injuries of the other three children are not known. One of the adults injured was taken to Methodist and the other was taken to Wishard Hospital. Their conditions are not known.

Investigators said normally 70 kids attend the day care, but several of them were on a field trip to see "Disney on Ice" at Conseco Fieldhouse. The children who attended the show did not return to the day care center and parents were notified to pick up their kids at the Fieldhouse.

Two people inside the vehicle that crashed into the day care were taken into police custody.

"There is possibly a third person involved in this and that is part of the investigation," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department.
