Survey Analyzes Air Medical Transport Providers Commitment to Safety

| Friday, December 16, 2011

In 2008, ThinkThroughTools, a Boardman, OH-based Outreach Systems firm, conducted a national AMRM (Air Medical Resource Management) survey to better understand the air medical industry's commitment to safety. Three years later, ThinkThroughTools is asking the same questions to determine what has changed.

"What's most important is to learn more about what happens on a daily basis, 365 days per year, and what evidence exists to verify that AMRM is part of each daily shift briefing—not just a one day per year educational event,” says Rich Obertots, ThinkThroughTools CEO.

Obertots hopes that results from the 2011 National AMRM Survey will help the industry to better understand air medical Safety Management Systems and how they are integrating AMRM as compared to 2008. Some key findings from the 2008 survey include:

  • 80% of respondents indicated that their organizations were not using AMRM training software
  • 69.6% were not engaging in competency testing for AMRM know-how and application
  • 53% did not have a strict policy to include AMRM training as part of each shift briefing
  • 71.8% believed the air medical industry was doing far too little AMRM training
  •

In its own efforts to assist organizations to implement a better safety plan, ThinkThroughTools introduced 365 Safety AMRM, a cloud-based system, that its clients use to engage in Safety and AMRM lessons and quizzes during each shift briefing 365 days of the year.

"We realized in 2001 that there were huge variances throughout the nation in how air and ground medical transport programs embedded Safety and AMRM into their daily operations,” says Obertots. “The intended outcome of 365 Safety AMRM was to assure that—each day and each shift—time was devoted to safety and AMRM education. Then we developed the cloud-based software so that each day crews would take short lessons and quizzes to electronically verify and document their commitment and knowledge."
