The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has released a policy statement, “Alternative Methods to Vascular Access in the Emergency Department,” that states alternative vascular access methods must be available in the emergency department when standard intravenous access (IV) procedures fail or are insufficient, and recommends intraosseous (inside the bone) vascular access as one option for consideration. The policy statement also recommends that Emergency Medicine departments establish policies and procedures to allow non-physician practitioners to administer IO access when indicated.
“This statement is significant, especially in the ED and hospital settings, because it recognizes IO as an essential alternative to intravenous vascular access and the critical role non-physicians, such as nurses and physician’s assistants, perform when it comes to utilizing IO in the ED,” commented Michael Voss, Chief Operating Officer of Vidacare Corporation.
