The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has released a policy statement, “Alternative Methods to Vascular Access in the Emergency Department,” that states alternative vascular access methods must be available in the emergency department when standard intravenous access (IV) procedures fail or are insufficient, and recommends intraosseous (inside the bone) vascular access as one option for consideration. The policy statement also recommends that Emergency Medicine departments establish policies and procedures to allow non-physician practitioners to administer IO access when indicated.

“This statement is significant, especially in the ED and hospital settings, because it recognizes IO as an essential alternative to intravenous vascular access and the critical role non-physicians, such as nurses and physician’s assistants, perform when it comes to utilizing IO in the ED,” commented Michael Voss, Chief Operating Officer of Vidacare Corporation. Vidacare is a market leader in the field of intraosseous vascular access with its EZ-IO® Intraosseous Infusion System.

The American College of Emergency Physicians promotes the highest quality of emergency care and is the leading advocate for emergency physicians, their patients, and the public.

Vidacare’s EZ-IO® Intraosseous Infusion System provides immediate vascular access for patients in multiple clinical settings, using the intraosseous (inside the bone) space. The EZ-IO is used by 90 percent of US advanced life support ambulances and over half of US Emergency Departments, as well as the US Military.

Established in 2001, Vidacare Corporation is the pioneer of a broad technology platform for use in the field of intraosseous medicine. Current products include the EZ-IO® Intraosseous Infusion System, the OnControl™ Bone Marrow System and the OnControl™ Bone Access System. Applications include vascular access, emergency and disaster medicine, oncology and spinal surgery. Vidacare’s focus on enhancing clinical efficacy, patient safety and comfort, and reducing complications and their associated costs, has resulted in its devices becoming the recognized technology standard. Privately held, the company is based in San Antonio, Texas, and its products are marketed in over 50 countries worldwide. www.vidacare.com
