University Hospital Donates CPAP Machines to Cleveland EMS

HARLAN SPECTOR | | Thursday, January 7, 2010

A machine used for decades to help sleep apnea patients breathe at night has become one of the best things to come along for people with congestive heart failure.

Emergency medical services in the last few years have adopted the technology, called continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, which forces oxygen through a mask into the lungs of patients short of breath. People with weakened hearts sometimes have trouble breathing because fluid backs up in the lungs.

The CPAP machines clear fluid from the lungs and help keep these patients alive and out of intensive care. Cleveland EMS is now on board with the treatment, after University Hospitals Case Medical Center donated 30 units to the city.
