Several Treated after NY Plant Ammonia Leak

| Thursday, August 13, 2009

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Two Rochester police officers are being treated for exposure to ammonia fumes after a leak at a milk processing plant.

Fire officials say a buildup of pressure occurred and ammonia leaked from a valve at the Upstate Farms Cooperative, Inc. plant around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Officials said the officers exposed to the fumes were taken to a hospital for observation and a family of six living across the street from the plant were treated at the scene. None of the 25 to 30 employees inside the plant were injured.

The area around the plant had been blocked off but is now open.

Fire officials say the situation is under control and an investigation has started to determine how the ammonia cloud was released.

A message left with Upstate Farms wasn't immediately returned.
