TORONTO - A science lab experiment gone wrong at a Toronto-area high school sent several students to hospital Wednesday afternoon, launching an investigation by the Ministry of Labour.

Peel region police said emergency crews were called to St. Marcellinus Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga at about 2:30 p.m., after a minor chemical experiment exploded.

Five students were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, said a Peel region ambulance official.

The official did not know the nature of the injuries.

Classrooms in the immediate area were evacuated following the explosion.

St. Marcellinus school officials would not release the chemicals being used in the experiment and refused to comment on the explosion citing the ongoing investigation.

"I can confirm that the Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident," said spokesperson William Lin.

The Ministry of Labour investigates workplace injuries and possible violations of the employment standards act.
