Calif. Pesticide Overspray Sickens 12

| Monday, July 13, 2009

(AP) TEHACHAPI, Calif. - Kern County fire officials say 14 people were sickened by a pesticide overspray.

The workers were exposed Friday morning when clouds of an insecticide called Assail wafted over from an orchard next to the onion field where they were working in the Cummings Valley area.

Fire crews say several victims were vomiting, and five workers received emergency decontamination treatment before being sent to area hospitals. Two ambulance employees also fell sick while evaluating victims.

The Kern County Department of Agriculture is investigating the incident.
